I offer individual counseling services for adult clients across the state of Georgia. Depending on your preference, I can see clients both in-person as well as online. While I work with clients with a variety of concerns, I specialize in trauma (religious, sexual, and childhood), Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders, Anxiety, Boundaries, and more. There is no one size fits all approach to therapy, so I like to tailor my approach to fit my client's unique needs. Here are a few of the clinical theories I use to guide my practice: EMDR, IFS, Narrative, DBT and Person Centered.
For clients who are interested in short-term work around specific concerns, I am exited to start offering coaching services. Specifically, I offer coaching for Deconstruction and Purity Culture Recovery. As a coach, I am able to work with clients across the U.S. and Canada. If you need therapy for an untreated mental illness or trauma, I recommend you look for a licensed mental health professional in your area. When working as a coach, I do not diagnose or treat mental illness. For more information, please see below.
I offer virtual and in-person consultations for mental health professions, church staff, etc. who are looking to learn more about mental health, trauma, church hurt, and purity culture recovery. I offer consultations for individuals or small groups. For large groups, I recommend booking a speaking engagement.
I am frequently asked if I am a Christian Counseling. The answer is yes and no. My faith is very important to me, but it is not how I provide therapy. I firmly believe in the use of evidence-based treatment because research shows it to be the most effective form of therapy, and I have certainly seen this in my practice. I happily welcome clients of all belief systems and will never force my personal beliefs on you. How much or how little we focus on faith and spirituality during our sessions is always entirely up to the client.
I am currently booking speaking engagements for 2024-2025 on topics related to mental health and faith including Purity Culture Recovery, Church Hurt & Deconstruction, Healthy Christian Sexuality, and more! For more information, please contact me.
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of empirically based treatment that involves using bilateral stimulation (like taps or eye movements) to produce healthy processing for a negative event. The bilateral stimulation yields similar results as REM, which is where the brain integrates information during sleep. By stimulating this type of processing in the brain while awake, clients are able to more rapidly and intentionally process negative events in a healthy way. Put simply, EMDR is a catalyst for the brain healing itself.
Negative experiences can create a “block” in the brain that limits healthy processing. We have to remove that block in order for us to return to healthy or adaptive processing. For example, we have to remove a splinter in order for our body to begin to heal. EMDR is effective in treating past negative experiences, current triggers or stressors, and future concerns. While it was developed for trauma, it is helpful in treating a variety of concerns including anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, etc. To learn more, check out this video.
Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMAD) is the term we use to describe the different mental health disorders experienced during pregnancy, after having a new baby, adopting, or experiencing pregnancy/infant loss. PMADs can show up any time starting in pregnancy until two years after birth or loss. Most people are familiar with postpartum depression, but there are many ways that women can be affected by pregnancy, loss, and the postpartum period.
If you think you may be struggling with a PMAD, please don't suffer in silence! One of the difficult parts of PMADs is that women often feel pressure to be seen as someone who can handle the challenges of pregnancy and motherhood. For this reason (and others), women may try to ignore or push through the scary thoughts and overwhelming feelings. I want to encourage any mama reading this to know that you do not have to carry this alone, and you deserve to feel better! It would be a privilege to sit with you in a judgement-free space and help you work toward healing.
Religious trauma can be defined as a religious experience that may have caused harm to someone's physical, emotional, sexual, or spiritual health and safety. This is such a hard thing to navigate as it can cause a crisis of faith, relational difficulties, feeling isolated, etc. It can be difficult to know where to turn because survivors often feel a lot of self -doubt and helplessness. As a Certified Religious Trauma Specialist, I care deeply about providing a safe space for those who may have experienced religious trauma or feel that they need to process negative religious experiences.
I would like to note that I am not anti-religion; this is sadly sometimes a misconception about therapists who work with religious trauma. I believe personally and professionally that religion can be a healthy, beautiful thing. Therapy for religious trauma is about validating the experiences of survivors and providing a safe space for them to heal from the harm that was done to them through unhealthy individuals or groups in the name of religion.
Deconstruction is the difficult process of sorting through what you have been taught about faith (and everything connected to it) and deciding what you do and don't believe, recognizing harmful teachings and how they have impacted you, and finding acceptance and peace with what you decide about your faith and identity. One of the challenging parts of deconstruction is that it can be very hard to talk about with family and friends, which can make the process very isolating. This is why it's so important to have safe spaces to sort through everything. There can be a lot of emotional turmoil that comes with deconstruction, but I want you to know it gets better! The main goal of my Deconstruction Coaching is to give you the tools to be able to navigate this season of life. I value creating a safe space for you and want you to know that I would never try to sway your beliefs. I would love to come along side you as you pursue peace and healing.
Purity culture is an evangelical movement that started in the 1990s that seeks to educate men and women about sex and their bodies from a Christian perspective. While this movement may have started with the best of intentions, research shows us there have been a lot of unexpected consequences leading to many problems for men and women individually as well as in their marriages. These problems include shame around body image and sex, self-hatred, vaginismus, unhealthy and unrealistic ideas about sex, and much more. This breaks my heart, especially knowing that this is not what God intended for us. So I have developed a passion for helping clients work through these issues so they can have a healthy relationship with themselves and others.
I was raised in purity culture, so I have lots of personal and professional experience seeing the extensive damage done by these toxic teachings. That being said, I also have personal and professional experience with finding healing from purity culture! I would be honored to help you find healing from purity culture too.
